De huidige singels vormden de grachten.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\">In 1934 zijn de grachten gedempt. Daar waar vroeger de stadspoorten waren, zijn scheepskanonnen geplaatst. Een gedeelte van de oude stadsmuur is te zien langs de Emmasingel \u00adtussen de appartementen van St.-Louis en de voormalige kaarsfabriek op nr. 12. Achter deze muur ligt de kloostertuin van de Zusters Birgittinessen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #666666;\">Op de hoek van de Emmasingel en de Paradijsstraat staat villa De Walburg. Deze villa werd in 1909 (zonder hoektoren) gebouwd door \u00adConstant Janssens. Hij noemde dit pand Villa Malta naar zijn gelijknamig geboortehuis in Bree. In 1917 betrok Constant sr. dit pand en bouwde er het ronde torentje naast. Het pand is later geheel gerestaureerd en ingericht als hoofdkantoor van bouwbedrijf Mertens.<br \/>\nTer hoogte van de kruising van de Emmasingel met de Langpoort staat het H. Hartbeeld. Dit beeld werd in 1921 geplaatst op het zo\u00adgeheten Julianaplein bij het Waaggebouw en\u00ad in 1934 verplaatst naar de huidige locatie. Het Waaggebouw is lang als zodanig in gebruik \u00adgeweest en bood van 1969 tot 1982 \u00adonderdak als VVV-kantoor.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n<style type=\"text\/css\"
